Quaternary Research Group

Research Team Leader: Dr. Dávid Molnár

Members of the research team: Dr. Sándor Gulyás, Katalin Náfrádi, Prof. Dr. Pál Sümegi

The Quaternary Research Group is conducting a multi-faceted investigation of dry and wet surface sediments from the most recent geological epoch, the Quaternary, encompassing the Pleistocene and Holocene periods. The objective of this research is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the climatic and environmental conditions over the past 2.5 million years, as well as the surface processes that have shaped the landscape of our country and the broader Carpathian Basin. The investigation comprises a comprehensive examination of loess-palaeosol sequences, archaeological excavations on terrestrial surfaces, and studies of lakes and wetlands on saturated surfaces.

The primary research includes paleoecological analyses, paleoclimatic reconstruction studies, malacological investigations, sedimentary geological examinations, paleobiological (morphometric) assessments, and archaeological geological research.
