Fluid–Rock Evolution & Dynamics (FRED) Research Group

Research Team Leader: Dr. Ervin Hrabovszki

Building on the research activities of its predecessor, the Fractured Reservoir Group, the Fluid–Rock Evolution & Dynamics (FRED) Research Group investigates fluid–rock interactions and their role in the structural, mineralogical, and geochemical evolution of the lithosphere. Our research spans a wide range of geological environments, from sedimentary basins to igneous and metamorphic rock bodies, encompassing diverse hydrocarbon systems as well as hydrothermal, magmatic, and metamorphic fluid systems.

Our work focuses on elucidating the relationships between fluid migration, rock deformation, and mineralogical reactions. A key research area is the investigation of the evolution of fractured rock bodies, their fluid-flow systems, and their palaeohydrological histories. We integrate petrological, geochemical, and structural geological analyses with rock-mechanical approaches, basin modelling, and the mathematical simulation and hydrodynamic assessment of fracture networks. Our aim is to understand how these interactions shape fluid–rock systems throughout geological time.
